Passwords

June 15, 2015 By Rob Marlowe

Hardly a day goes by without a news report somewhere about hackers breaking into one system or another.  The biggest single factor that most of these breakins have in common is that the system or network was protected with a weak password.

[I] Jun 11 4:22:52 [180.254.42.142:49523][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password Password1
[I] Jun 11 4:22:54 [180.254.42.142:49949][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password p@ssw0rd
[I] Jun 11 4:22:58 [180.254.42.142:50433][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password password
[I] Jun 11 4:23:02 [180.254.42.142:50836][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password password123
[I] Jun 11 4:23:05 [180.254.42.142:51042][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password support
[I] Jun 11 4:23:10 [180.254.42.142:51480][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password qwerty
[I] Jun 11 4:23:12 [180.254.42.142:51703][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password qwerty1
[I] Jun 11 4:23:31 [180.254.42.142:53388][ID]SMTP Server: AUTH failed, username postmaster, password changeme

Shown above is a short log snippet from a few days ago.  All of these failed login attempts happened in less than 45 seconds.  They originated in Indonesia.  Our log files are full of similar attempts from Russia, China, Vietnam, and other countries as well.

“Postmaster” is a common mailbox name, which is why the hacker chose this name.  As you can see, they ran through a series of very simple password variants.  You’d probably be surprised at how many folks actually use “password” or some variation for their password.

The bad guys don’t type these attempts in.  They use computers to work through all the possible password combinations.  Because a lot of people use words for their passwords, the bad guys will work their way through a dictionary list, hence the origin of the term “dictionary attack”.

While no system is likely to survive a concerted attack by a government with unlimited computing resources, you CAN protect yourself from the garden variety attacks like the one shown above.  How?  It’s actually quite simple:

Make your password both long and hard to guess, while still easy to remember.  Using the first letter of a phrase will work, provided that is obscure enough.

MTFBWY is likely a poor choice as Star Wars has made the phrase commonplace.  At six characters, it is also too short.

Sbc,CD.Awgootj?  would be a better one.  (From Stan Freberg’s “United States of America” when Columbus asks the indian chief for directions to the nearest bank:  Sorry, banks closed, Columbus Day.  Are we going out on that joke?)

Take a memorably phrase from your favorite classic movie, play, or Bible verse and toss in a couple of special characters and you’ve got something that you can remember and that is strong enough to protect you from most of the bad guys.  (Hint:  If you are going to pick a Bible verse, don’t pick one of the commonly quoted ones.)

Pet names are very popular as passwords.  They are also very poor choices as they are easily guessed.  This is especially true if you plaster pictures of your pets all over facebook.  “Rover” is a bad password.  “IlR,wgh@tWPSPCA!” would be a much better one, and it is just as easy to remember the phrase “I love Rover, we got him at the West Pasco SPCA!” as it would be to remember the dog’s name.

The longer the password, the better.  A password phrase of five or six characters is going to be fairly easy to crack with a brute force attack.  One of a dozen characters will take MUCH longer to hack.

You will also want to change your passwords periodically.  Both Quickbooks and several of the e-commerce sites I regularly use prompt me to change my passwords every three months.

Needless to say, don’t use the same password for everything.  If you have a different password for each place that needs a password, having one compromised won’t give the bad guys everything.

Where do you need a password?

Unless you’ve got family members you want to restrict from the computer, you probably don’t need a login password on a desktop machine.  If you carry your notebook around with you, you probably DO want a password on it.  Keep in mind that password reset disks are readily available and, if someone steals your computer, they won’t have much trouble getting into it.  (Note:  You should consider encrypting the drives on business machines with sensitive data, especially notebooks.)

You SHOULD have a decent password on your email account and any online accounts you have.  This includes bank accounts, facebook, and your website.

Why you need a strong password for online banking ought to be obvious.

Most people don’t think about facebook though.  I’ve lost track of the number of facebook friends who have had their accounts hacked. These hacks can range from annoying to full boat embarrassing.

Ditto email accounts.  When your friends get an email from you inviting them to view some link that you didn’t really send, they are going to blame you when their computer gets hacked.  Additionally, facebook, banks, and other accounts often have a password reset feature that sends the reset instructions to your email account.  If your email account is compromised, then everything else is also at risk.

A hacked website can do more to damage a company’s reputation than pretty much anything else, especially if the website collects credit card or other personal information.

There are some password management programs available.  I haven’t used any of them as they strike me as just a means of putting all of your proverbial eggs in one basket.

Likewise, don’t save your passwords in your browser.  While this may be “okay” for low value passwords, it is an absolute “NEVER” for passwords to sensitive websites, such as your bank.

One final thought:  Do NOT write down all your passwords and tape them to your computer.  That pretty much defeats the whole purpose.

Good luck and stay safe.  Feel free to give me a call at 727-847-2424 or drop me an email if you have any questions.

SCAM ALERT – BE CAREFUL WHEN BUYING OR SELLING ON CRAIGSLIST

Craigslist can be a convenient and inexpensive way to get a great deal on used items or make some extra cash if you have items to sell. Most of the transactions that originate on Craigslist happen without a hitch, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be wary. Unscrupulous people can use Craigslist to take advantage of you in multiple ways: by gathering your personal information, making fake deals to steal your money, or physically harming you. Protect yourself by taking the following precautions:

~ Rule #1 is to use common sense. If something feels fishy or “off,” it probably is.

~ Take advantage of the Craigslist feature that allows you to hide your email address. Give your mobile phone number, so it can’t be traced to your home.

~ If possible, meet in a public place such as a coffee shop or store parking lot. Some police stations allow citizens to complete such transactions on their premises.

~ Bring a friend and your phone to any meeting. Let others know where you’ll be.

~ If you’re selling and must meet at your home, move the item to a visible location, such as an open garage.

~ The best way to be paid is in cash. Never issue refunds on checks that haven’t yet cleared, and never send money to purchase an item you haven’t seen.

Remember, people you meet online aren’t always who they appear to be, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself, both online and off. For additional recommendations, visit http://www.staysafeonline.org.

SHORT FAQ – WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO HANDLE AN INTERNET TROLL?

Question: I’m troubled by the mean comments I find on Twitter and elsewhere, including some that have been directed at me. What can I do?

Answer: Sounds like you’ve discovered one of the downsides of online interaction: trolls. A troll is someone who uses offensive, inflammatory, or irrelevant messages to illicit emotional responses from others and throw the intended conversation off course. Trolls thrive on conflict, so one of the best ways to deal with them is to ignore them. However, if ignoring doesn’t work or isn’t an option, there are other steps you can
take:

~Don’t take it personally. A troll’s unkind words truly have nothing to do with you; they’re more of a reflection of that person’s own problems.

~Try being nice. Some trolls are actually just people with strong opinions or who need a lot of attention. If you engage with them nicely (such as asking for clarification), they may respond in kind.

~Use your settings. Many sites have options that allow you to control whose input you see and don’t see. Set yours to omit the troll’s posts from your view.

~Kick them out. If the site has a moderator, ask that person to take appropriate steps to limit the troll’s access or kick them off the site altogether.

~Set a good example. Trolls’ behavior can remind us that it’s easy to hurt other people online. Take extra care to ensure your own messages come across the way in which you intend.

SCAM ALERT – FAKE PUPPY ADOPTION OFFERS

Looking for a new pet? You may want to think twice about following up on an ad for an expensive breed of dog offered for a low price. These ads often appear with an irresistible photo of a puppy in newspapers or on websites, Craig’s List, or Facebook. It typically works like this: The scammer posts the ad and has you pay for shipping via wire transfer. But no puppy is sent, because there really isn’t one (those adorable photos are often stock images). There are variations on this scam — maybe the scammer asks you to pay for “fees” rather than shipping — but you get the idea.

To avoid being a victim, ask for additional photos, a phone number, and registration information from the seller. If those pieces aren’t forthcoming, don’t act on the ad. Never send money to another country, and never pay via cash or wire transfer. Watch for poor grammar or ads that seem “off” in the way they’re worded. Finally, be wary of sellers that are anxious to sell a pet quickly.

NEWS FROM THE SHOP

The end of last month found us “Spring Cleaning” around the shop.   We are offering an eclectic assortment of computer accessories both on eBay and on a “Sale Table” in the middle of our showroom.  We are pricing all of it to sell.  Come by and check it out.

We are making room so that we can offer more classes and one-on-one support for our customers.

Without the large displays in the middle of the showroom, we will also be able to offer larger classes if we outgrow the existing classroom.  This area is still a “work in progress” for now.  It will be much more open once we’ve finished.

We will continue to carry an inventory of the most commonly requested items and we can special order just about anything computer related that you can think of, including both custom built and brand name computers.

At the risk of being accused of going over to “The Dark Side”, we are pleased to announce that we are expanding our support for Apple devices.  Our favorite antivirus product from F-Secure now has a Mac version and we’ve picked up enough experience with our iPhones and iPads that we are comfortable offering to assist you in figuring out your Apple devices.  We are updating our extremely popular remote support system to work with Macs, iPads, and iPhones.

Second logo

New Gulfcoast Logo
Our New Logo

There is a lot of “behind the scenes” stuff going on here as well.   You will notice that we’ve adopted a new logo.  The black & white logo we started out with twelve years ago was pretty boring and none of us ever quite warmed up to its replacement when it arrived a few years ago.  Look for our new logo to show up everywhere, beginning with our website and our remote support portal.

I’ve been spending quite a bit of my spare time working on my web design skills.  It has been over 20 years since I first started hand coding in the original version of HTML.  I’ve used a few different authoring tools over the years, each with its own advantages.  For the last two years, I have been concentrating on building sites using the WordPress platform.  WordPress is now THE most popular web authoring platform on the planet.

I’ve been taking online courses to pick up the new tricks I need and to hone my skills.  I’ve also been attending the WordPress Meetups held in New Port Richey.  The last meetup was held in our classroom and the next one is also scheduled to be held there.

The Gulfcoast Networking sites aren’t that fancy, but they frequently serve as a test bed for new features and tricks.  Watch the Gulfcoast Networking website closely and you will continue to see me test new features, such as the blue link color that showed up a few days ago.

Some of the newer sites I’ve built are requiring quite a bit of customization. Interestingly enough, hand coding hasn’t gone completely out of style.

One of the new client sites I’m quite proud of is the one for Santa Dollars.  I took the old conventional website and rebuilt if from the ground up to display properly on both regular computers and mobile devices.  It was ready to go the first of April, but we waited until after Easter to go live as among the products you can purchase on the site are “Bunny Bucks”, designed especially for Easter.

If you know someone with an old, outdated website, then send them my way.  I’m currently scheduling new web projects.

What does this all mean for our clients?  It’s pretty simple.  You can expect to see:

  • An expanded number of computer platforms we are prepared to support:
    • Desktops
    • Notebooks
    • Tablets
    • Smart Phones
(Hardware repairs are limited to Windows based systems)
  • A more comprehensive suite of services for our business clients, including:
    • Remote monitoring and management of our clients’ networks
    • Onsite support, when needed
    • Hardware repairs for most Windows systems
    • Anti-viral / Anti-malware cleanups and protection
    • Full website support, including SEO optimization, analytics, uptime monitoring, security and content updates
    • Assistance with establishing a social media presence (eg. facebook business pages)
    • Assistance with establishing a company blog
    • Assistance with  email marketing while staying in full compliance with the CAN-SPAM act.
    • Assistance with, and supervision of, outside vendors (eg. Brighthouse, Verizon, telephone vendors, and specialized software providers)
    • Advice and assistance in complying with new regulatory requirements, such as disk and email encryption
  • More focused services for our individual (non-business) clients, including:
    • Advice on picking out your next computer or accessory
    • Special orders for hardware items
    • Amazing values, such as our popular “Safe Computing” packages that let you choose the computer support level you want at a price you can afford
    • One on one and group classes
    • Repairs for your Windows desktop or notebook computer

THIS MONTH’S FAQ – CAN MY COMPUTER BE DAMAGED DURING A STORM?

Question: I’m always a little concerned when it’s stormy out. Is there a possibility bad weather can damage my computer?

Answer: Yes, a lightning strike can cause considerable damage to, or even destroy, computers and other electronic devices. Your house should be equipped with a Network Interface Device (NID), which is designed to prevent lightning from damaging wiring. You can and should also use an uninterruptible power supply (USP). But, neither of these precautions is guaranteed to prevent damage. The best way to protect your electronics is to unplug them during a storm. After the storm passes, be sure to start them up again to make sure they’re operating properly.

SCAM ALERT – AVOID ONLINE TRAVEL BOOKING SCAMS

Booking travel online can put you in a vulnerable position: you’ve got your credit card out, and the online travel world may be as unknown as the new place you want to visit. Some online travel deals may seem too good to be true, and some of them are. To be sure, consider following these tips:

~Only book travel through reputable sites. Well-known travel sites like Orbitz or Priceline are good bets. If you’re unsure, check the Better Business Bureau’s review at www.bbb.org.

~Carefully review reservation and cancellation policies before clicking the “buy” button.

~For all-inclusive packages, understand exactly what’s included and what’s not.

~Pay with a credit card, rather than a debit card. Credit cards offer protection against fraudulent purchases that debit cards may not.

~Don’t ever pay via wire transfer.

~Don’t respond to emails saying you’ve won a vacation — especially if collecting your prize means traveling to claim it.

~When booking through a one-stop-shop contact the individual entities (such as airline, hotel, car rental) to confirm the details of your purchase.

Finally, use common sense. If anything seems fishy, strange, or just plain off, do some research to find out if the vendor is legitimate or just move on to the next travel site — there are plenty to choose from!

NEWS FROM THE SHOP

I’ve been building websites for the better part of twenty years.  During the last couple of years, I’ve been standardizing my website design to utilize the WordPress platform.  WordPress is now THE most popular foundation for websites worldwide.  As part of that effort, I’ve been taking online classes and experimenting with new features on as many websites as I can.

More and more people are looking at websites using their smart phones or other mobile devices.  As a result, websites need to be “mobile responsive”, or in plain English, mobile friendly.  With Google’s announcement a couple of weeks ago that they were going to start penalizing websites that are NOT mobile friendly beginning April 21st, this transition has become all the more important.  The WordPress based websites I’ve been building are ALL mobile friendly, meaning that they display properly on a smart phone.

I’ve completed a number of new or revised websites over the past few months.  Each one has had some fancy features on which I’ve been able to hone my skills.  A few examples include:

http://www.vssfinancials.com – I converted a number of Powerpoint presentations into videos and then embedded the videos into the website.

http://www.kycsol.com – Getting this site right required me to dive into the CSS code that governs how the site looks.

http://www.specialtyinstallations.com – This site includes some fancy image mapping.  I’ve also done more graphics work on this site than on all of the other websites I’ve worked on so far this year put together.  The site also required some custom CSS code.

http://www.jamescampbellpa.com – This site uses a table function to make lists display correctly.  This site is a perfect example of a simple website that can easily be expanded.

http://www.robmarlowe.com – A blogging site, where I publish articles about the City of New Port Richey.

I’ve got several new websites under development, including a specialty retail site that is due to go live the week after Easter.

If you have a website that needs help or you work for a company with a stale, static website; please call me or have your boss call me and we’ll set a time to get together.  We an also help you fine tune your SEO, social media, and web advertising campaigns.

Don’t be concerned about how simple or complex you website project might be.  I’ve got access to some excellent web designers we bring in if you’ve got a website that is going to need high-end features that I’m not up to speed on.

THIS MONTH’S FAQ – HOW TO STOP VIDEOS FROM AUTO-PLAYING ON FACEBOOK

Question: When I open Facebook, every video in my feed start playing automatically. Can I make it stop?

Answer: The short answer is yes! And you have good reasons to want to do so. All those videos can use up your computer’s power and might not be appropriate for the environment where you’re watching them (such as work). Not to mention, it can be just plain annoying. To turn off this feature in Facebook, follow these instructions:

~From your Facebook home page, in the upper-right corner, click the down arrow, and select Settings from the menu.

~On the next screen, in the left column menu, choose Videos.

~Under Video Settings, next to Auto-Play Videos, click the down arrow, and select Off.

The process for turning off this feature on your Facebook app is similar. Tap the menu icon, go into Settings, and find the video option from there.

SCAM ALERT – BEWARE OF MALVERTISING

Malvertising is one of the latest ways for bad guys to get bad stuff onto your computer. Here’s how it works: You visit a website, click on an ad, and get directed to another site that tells you your computer needs an update and encourages you to download phony software that will “fix” the problem. The software then infects your computer with problematic malware or spyware.

Here’s catch #1: Some malvertising doesn’t require you to click on the ad. Just its presence on the site you’ve navigated to can give it access to your computer. Here’s catch #2: This phenomenon isn’t just happening on “sketchy” websites; it’s happening on reputable sites such as YouTube and Reuters.

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to protect yourself:

1. Don’t click ads that seem too good to be true, such as those that offer money, gifts, discounts, or anything else for free.

2. Ensure your operating system is up to date. Operating systems typically update automatically. When they do, be sure to follow the instructions to leave your computer on.

3. Set security settings on your browser to detect sites with malvertising. For example, in Chrome, in the Settings section, click Show Advanced Settings. Under Privacy, ensure the Enable Phishing and Malware Protection box is checked.

4. Disable Flash. There will be a different process, depending on which browser you use. For Chrome, go to Settings and click on Show Advanced Settings. Under Privacy, click Content Settings. In the new screen, under Plug-ins, choose Click to Play.

NEWS FROM THE SHOP

February may be the shortest month of the year, but we managed to stuff quite a bit into it.  March promises to be just as interesting.   I’ve been learning some very cool tricks for coding websites.  A lot of what I’ve been doing is “behind the scenes”, but some of the very subtle changes you may have noticed on our websites are part of this evolution.

Lenovo, one of my favorite brand name computer companies, got caught installing junkware on some of their consumer systems.  You can read more about this issue here.  Sadly, Lenovo isn’t alone.  If you need a reason to consider a custom built system, this would be it.

The other benefit of a custom built system is that you get exactly what you want, no more, no less.   I built myself a new Vista machine back when Vista first came out.  I picked Vista so that I could get up to speed on the then new operating system.   Because my computer was advanced at the time, with a fast quad core processor, etc. and high quality components, it lasted the better part of eight years and only recently started showing its age.  It finally gave up the ghost, so I’m getting ready to build myself a new system.   I haven’t settled on specs yet, but a fast processor and plenty of memory will guarantee that I won’t outgrow the new system any time soon.

Over on the corporate services side of the shop, we offer both a la carte and IT management service packages.  If you want to simplify your company’s computer networking, give us a call at 727-847-2424.

SITES OF THE MONTH – GREAT SITES TO CHECK OUT IN MARCH

Chasco Fiesta
http://www.chascofiesta.com
If it is March, the Chasco Fiesta can’t be far away.  Chasco features our biggest street and boat parades, some amazing music, and enough great food to make you want to toss your New Year’s diet resolution out the windows.  I’m partial to the Sertoma Beef BBQ the first weekend of Chasco as well as the funnel cakes that one of the other Sertoma clubs cook up.

With the exception of the country music concert, all of the concerts are free.  Quite a few of our local non-profits use Chasco as a major fund raising opportunity.  See you there.

(Gulfcoast Networking is pleased to provide free website hosting for the Chasco Fiesta.)

THIS MONTH’S FAQ – HOW CAN I KEEP NEIGHBORS FROM USING MY HOME WI-FI?

Question: I suspect my neighbors are using my Wi-Fi. How can I prevent this?

Answer: You’re right to take precautions, as higher data charges, slow speeds, and hacking can result from unauthorized persons using your Wi-Fi (this is known as “piggybacking”). There are many steps you can take to prevent it from happening. Here are three of the most effective:

~Create a password. Go into the admin dashboard for your router and find the default password. Change it to something difficult to guess. The best passwords are long, random combinations of letters and numbers. Don’t worry about having to remember your password — you’ll only have to enter it the first time you use a device on the network.

~Encrypt wireless signals. This task also involves getting into your router dashboard. Once you’re there, change your security mode to WPA2, ~Reduce your range. Place your router in the middle of your home to restrict its range only to authorized users.
